Dirk Jacobs, manager of Cape Cadogan, has undertaken a personal quest to ‘Test ‘n Tell’ some of the Cape’s current popular restaurants.
Today we explore Hemelhuijs, based in the Cape Town foreshore and a popular hangout for creatives and corporates alike.
The owners change the interior seasonally. They will redo the entire restaurant – the paint, the decor and the menu. A few key pieces remain and are incorporated into the fresh design. The decor blends Scandinavian designed tables and chairs, with fresh produce displays. It’s whimsical but structured, in a beautiful way.
It’s a popular breakfast destination and is also open for lunch. The Dutch/ South African inspired menu changes seasonally, but remains farm-style, fresh and homely.
Based on the current menu, Dirk recommends the Old fashioned cinnamon dumplings with home made custard, poached farm eggs, artichoke, hollandaise and smoked trout (or bacon), home made potato rösti with salmon gravadlax and soft poached egg, smoked trout.
This one earned a 5 out of 5 from Dirk!
